Rendering Process
Most people don’t know that often the beef tallow sold on the market is made from fat that’s been stored for months—sometimes harvested overseas and shipped internationally before it’s ever rendered. By the time it reaches a jar, it’s old. They also rush the rendering process, exposing the tallow to high temperatures and even scorching it. This changes the composition, the flavor, the quality, and gives it that overly beefy smell. Because of that, commercial tallow processors resort to chemicals, bleach, or deodorizers just to make it acceptable.
At Riverbend Ranch?
We embrace tradition.
With a carefully established patent-pending process, our tallow is gently rendered at lower temperatures to ensure exceptional quality. Our artisanally inspired process creates a cleaner, lighter, more pure tallow without any burned or overly meaty flavors.
This patent-pending process results in:
-
Higher Smoke Point
-
Optimal Flavor
-
Exceptional Purity
-
Less Odor
-
Longer Shelf Life

Frequently Asked Questions
What is beef tallow?
Riverbend Ranch Premium Beef Tallow is 100% pure, natural beef fat made exclusively from Riverbend Ranch Black Angus cattle, raised in the USA with the highest standards and the very best genetics—without growth hormones or antibiotics. Unlike typical tallow you’ll find online and in the grocery store (that is processed weeks or months after harvesting), ours is made the day the beef is processed, using a patent-pending production process designed to protect purity, freshness, and flavor. No beefy smell, just pure, fresh tallow. Unlike many competitors, we never use chemicals or bleach to alter flavor, color, or fragrance. Instead, we take the time to carefully process our tallow without direct heat, preserving its natural quality. Many producers rush the process and scorch their tallow and then rely on chemicals to mask the damage. Riverbend Ranch Premium Beef Tallow is truly in a class of its own, and you’ll see and taste the difference from the very first use. You have to experience it for yourself!
What makes Riverbend Ranch Premium Beef Tallow superior?
It is the freshest tallow in the world! Riverbend Ranch Premium Beef Tallow stands apart for three reasons: the quality of the cattle, the exceptional freshness, and the way we make it. The result is 100% pure tallow with a clean label, mild flavor, and premium culinary performance—crafted with intention from start to finish.
What does beef tallow taste like?
Riverbend Ranch Premium Beef Tallow has a clean, mild flavor. It’s unlike any tallow you’ve ever tasted. Our process helps create a tallow without a strong beefy smell or the overly beefy flavor that many people associate with traditional tallow; it simply adds richness and depth without overpowering your food.
What is beef tallow used for?
Think of beef tallow as the ultimate all-purpose cooking fat. It handles high heat beautifully and adds a subtle, comforting richness to almost anything you cook.
You can use it for:
- Searing steaks, burgers, chicken, or veggies
- Frying foods for crisp, golden results
- Roasting potatoes and vegetables
- Sautéing with clean, even heat
- Baking in savory recipes as a natural alternative to butter or seed oils
- Stirring into soups or sauces to add a silky richness
Because the flavor is mild and pure—not overly beefy—it enhances your food without overpowering it. Once you try it, it quickly becomes a pantry favorite.
Does beef tallow need to be refrigerated?
Tallow is completely shelf-stable! Here’s how to keep it fresh:
- Everyday use: Leave it on your counter in a cool, dark spot.
- Occasional use: Store it in the pantry.
- Long-term storage: Keep it in the refrigerator for extended freshness.
Properly stored, tallow can last up to a year at room temperature thanks to its naturally stable structure.
Where does Riverbend Ranch get its tallow?
All of our tallow is produced fresh at our state-of-the-art processing facility in Idaho. Our tallow is produced from the natural fats of cattle from Riverbend Ranch—one of the only fully vertically integrated ranching operations in the country.
Vertical integration means we control:
- Cattle genetics
- Feeding
- Ranching practices
- Pasture management
- Our own processing facility
It’s how we uphold purity, consistency, and the highest animal-welfare standards.
Is beef tallow healthier than vegetable oil?
In the 1970s and 1980s, we were taught that polyunsaturated fats from
vegetable and seed oils were healthier than tallow, but more recent research
flips those findings on their head.
The problem comes when seed oils are heated. High temperatures can cause the
oils to oxidize, which can create harmful compounds like aldehydes and lipid
peroxides.
To make the problem worse, every time you reheat polyunsaturated fats, the
smoke point decreases, lowering the point at which they begin to oxidize. This
is especially detrimental in restaurants and other kitchens that reuse oil for
frying or other purposes.
Because of issues like that, more and more consumers are moving away from
highly processed seed oils and returning to traditional cooking fats like
butter and tallow that are naturally more stable and perform exceptionally well
at all temperatures. That makes it a cleaner, more dependable option for
roasting, frying, sautéing, and searing.
Riverbend Ranch Premium Beef Tallow offers a simple, traditional alternative
to ultra-processed cooking oils. It’s one ingredient, nothing else—100% pure
beef tallow with no additives, blends, preservatives, or chemical shortcuts.
Why do we package our tallow in a plastic container versus glass?
We use science and proven technology rather than social media folklore to make packaging decisions.
There are legitimate concerns that high temperatures can cause some types of plastic to leach microplastics into the product. However, Riverbend Ranch does not use those types of plastic.
Instead, Riverbend Ranch uses a specially formulated, heavy-walled, polypropylene jar using a high-performance thermal resin that is rated for extremely high heat and specifically for the manufacture of tallow. This superior form of polypropylene has been proven to not leach microplastics at the temperature that we manufacture our tallow. In fact, it is proven safe at 265°F, which is almost 100 degrees hotter than the temperature of our tallow when we fill the container.
